A writing path
Story structure
Use structure tools to track changes across scenes and chapters, then audit specific claims with evidence. A scene plan, belief arc, continuity ledger, causal repair, and foreshadowing matrix answer different questions.
Start with what you have
You know events but cannot identify what each scene changes.
Build cards with before/after states and remove duplicated functions before grouping chapters.
A character's final decision feels disconnected from the middle.
Connect belief, pressure, action, and consequence in successive steps; test whether the final choice is earned.
An object, injury, date, or location seems inconsistent across excerpts.
Make a state ledger with source labels and paired evidence. Separate a direct contradiction from an unreported transition.
A result lacks a needed resource, action, or piece of knowledge.
Name the missing condition and decide whether to supply it earlier, change the result, or accept a purposeful failure.
A reveal or later action needs earlier preparation.
Map outcome, existing clue, proposed plant, scene position, and reader interpretation. A hint does not replace an enabling action.
Work in this order
Collect actual states
Start with scene outcomes and accepted facts, not a memory of the draft. Mark source locations for information the ending depends on.
Group purposeful chapters
Give each chapter a goal and changed exit, using scene outcomes to justify boundaries. Keep belief changes tied to events.
Classify the issue
Ask whether two claims explicitly conflict, a transition is unreported, or a result lacks a necessary cause. Record unknowns without turning them into guaranteed errors.
Repair and recheck both ends
Write the earlier action and later payoff, update the plan, then audit timing, access, resources, and reader interpretation at each location.
A worked path
Original authored workflow: A dawn excerpt says Lio's electric skiff battery is empty; dusk prose lets him motor away. The continuity ledger records the two charge states, but the causal question is what supplied energy between them. An available charger and forty-minute sunlight window make an earlier charging action possible, not already true. Add Lio connecting and checking the charge during routine work, then revise dusk to use that established charge. The foreshadowing row can point readers to the charger lead; it cannot substitute for charging. A chapter may end when preparation is complete and the next begin when floodwater makes it consequential. Each tool contributes a different part of the repair.
Practice one step
- Turn plot beats into scene cards →
- Build a chapter outline from scene outcomes →
- Audit continuity with an evidence ledger →
- Repair a causal gap with earlier evidence →
Next step
After a structural repair, re-read the changed excerpts in context and update the scene/chapter plan. Carry the accepted facts into the manuscript-preparation route when writing a synopsis; do not describe a discarded ending or a planned fix as if it were already in the story.
