A practical writing exercise
Audit continuity with an evidence ledger
Create a fact ledger and located issue table for three excerpts, separating a direct contradiction from an unreported transition and offering bounded repair choices.
Your starting material
Use this complete original material for the demonstration. You can copy or download it before working through the steps.
Original excerpts: [S1] At noon Neri threw her only copper coin into the river and watched it sink. [S2] At dusk the same copper coin lay in her pocket, where it had remained without interruption all day. [S3] The next morning Neri paid the ferryman with that copper coin. All three are reliable narrator statements, not dialogue, dreams, flashbacks, duplicate coins, or lies. They refer to the same coin and consecutive times. No recovery scene has been supplied. The noon throw, uninterrupted-pocket claim, and next-morning payment are all checking evidence, not instructions that every sentence must remain unchanged. The author must decide which claim to revise. Only these excerpts are in scope.
Deliberately flawed example
Deliberately flawed example: There are thirty continuity errors because coins cannot be found again. Rewrite all the chapters. S3 proves that S1 never happened, so S2 must be correct.
Record state with source and time
Create entries for entity, property, value, time, and source. The coin's location is river at noon and pocket without interruption at dusk. 'Without interruption all day' is stronger than simply being back in a pocket; it explicitly denies the noon departure.
A ledger is a reference, not a vote. Two later mentions do not outvote one earlier event. Decide which story fact you want, then repair the minimum conflicting claim and any necessary transition.
Give conflicts and gaps different treatment
S1 versus S2 is a direct contradiction under the fixed narrator assumptions. S1 versus S3 alone leaves a recovery gap: finding a coin later is possible, but no recovery is supplied. Do not treat that silence as proof of impossibility.
Use repair options that identify changed text. Preserve the throw and add recovery while removing 'without interruption,' or preserve uninterrupted possession and revise the throw to a different object. Each route changes something; neither can truthfully claim all original assertions survive.
One possible revision
One possible revision — fact ledger: Entity copper coin | uniqueness: only one [S1]; identity same in all excerpts [material]. Noon | location river, sinking | exact evidence S1: 'threw her only copper coin into the river and watched it sink.' Dusk | location pocket, uninterrupted possession all day | exact evidence S2: 'where it had remained without interruption all day.' Next morning | transferred to ferryman | exact evidence S3: 'paid the ferryman with that copper coin.' Issue table: I1 direct contradiction, S1↔S2, location/history: sinking at noon contradicts never leaving the pocket that day. Option A preserve throw: revise S2 to a recovered coin and supply how it was recovered. Option B preserve possession: revise S1 so a different established object is thrown. A duplicate coin would be a new premise change, not an invisible repair. I2 unreported transition, S1→S3, location/ownership: payment requires coin to return to Neri, but no recovery is supplied. If throw is retained, add a plausible recovery before payment; if throw is removed, no recovery is needed. Do not claim recovery is impossible from this excerpt alone. Selected repair, preserving throw: proposed replacement for S2—'At dusk Neri's copper coin lay wet in her pocket. The ferryman had hauled it from the shallow landing mud with his scoop while she held the boat.' S3 remains unchanged. This adds a recovery action and a shallow landing as explicit proposals; check them against the fuller setting before accepting. It removes uninterrupted possession, not the noon throw. Scope: coin location/history only in S1–S3. No claim about other continuity or the whole book.
What changed and why
- Attached each state and issue to exact evidence and time, replacing a broad accusation with a reproducible comparison.
- Separated the direct uninterrupted-possession conflict from a possible omitted recovery, then named the assertion and new setting detail changed by the selected repair.
A choice worth keeping
Keep the next-morning payment if the author wants the throw and recovery to matter. It can become a payoff after the missing transition is earned.
Try it with fresh material
Original transfer excerpts: [S1] On Monday Pia burned her only blue scarf completely in the stove. [S2] On Tuesday the same scarf hung in the hall, never removed from its hook since Sunday. [S3] On Wednesday Pia wore that scarf to the market. Narration is reliable; same scarf; no duplicate, magic, dream, or flashback. Complete burning is established, so unlike an object sinking intact, ordinary recovery cannot restore it. Only these passages are in scope.
Build a dated state ledger and issue table with paired quotes. Distinguish direct conflict from any weaker inference, propose two repair routes, and select the smallest coherent route with exact changed wording. Deliver ledger, issues, repair, and scope note.
Feedback for your attempt
- Does your solution pretend a completely burned scarf can be retrieved intact? Revise an asserted fact or explicitly propose a new world rule; do not hide the change.
- Do not classify every later mention independently as a new unrelated error. Group claims by entity and conflict.
- Your repair must acknowledge which original statement it changes; preserving all claims is impossible under the supplied facts.
Check before moving on
- Record the source's reliability before treating a character statement as fact.
- Use paired evidence for a contradiction and a stated missing transition for a gap.
- Check repair proposals against the full setting before declaring them accepted.
