A writing path

Scene writing

Choose the scene task by the material you already have: a plan calls for new prose, an existing ending calls for continuation, and two fixed endpoints call for a bridge. Define the required change before asking for more words.

Start with what you have

You have plot events but no draftable scene.

Make a card with an entry goal, resistance, decision, and exit state; then draft the attempt that causes that change.

You are choosing the first passage of the story.

Try task-first and disturbance-first openings, keeping narrator knowledge inside the chosen viewpoint.

People exchange background without affecting each other.

Give speakers incompatible immediate goals and distinct information. Plan a tactic change when a line fails.

A draft ends at a moment you want to continue.

Preserve the exact ending and write the next immediate action in the same time, place, and viewpoint.

You need depth inside existing events, or a link between two fixed moments.

For depth, expand perception, action, and strategy without changing the event skeleton. For a link, preserve both endpoints and show the time/place gap.

          Work in this order

          1. Choose the operation

Write whether you are creating, opening, continuing, deepening, or bridging. State the source text that must remain and the required endpoint.

            • Plan one turn

Give the viewpoint character an attempt and a blocker. Record the before/after state before drafting prose.

            • Make interaction cause change

Use actions and dialogue tactics to create the turn. If both people want different outcomes, track what each knows and withholds.

              • Verify the boundary

Check fixed facts, exact source endings, knowledge, and event order. Read a bridge beside both anchors and reduce an expansion to its original event skeleton.

                A worked path

Original authored workflow: Mira ends outside an archive: 'The door was locked from the inside.' Continuation is a grille exchange with the established night clerk, who issues tomorrow's warehouse appointment. It cannot begin with Mira already indoors. A bridge then takes the slip through a night at home and a cross-town morning journey. The next fixed opening is her placing the slip on the warehouse desk at nine. If the grille exchange feels rushed, expansion can deepen her waiting and note-taking while preserving issue-slip→leave→return tomorrow. If a scene is needed at the warehouse, a new scene plan must define what Mira wants there and what changes; the transition should not secretly solve the manifest mystery.

                Practice one step

                Next step

Keep a copy of the original beside the accepted scene. Carry only confirmed new facts to the next scene card. When revising voice or length later, use the prose-editing route while protecting the change this scene earned.
