A practical writing exercise

Write an ending that resolves the central choice

Write three endings with different costs and a promise-recovery table, ensuring that the protagonist's final action resolves the central floodgate choice.

Your starting material

Use this complete original material for the demonstration. You can copy or download it before working through the steps.

Original practice material: Trainee navigator Iona controls a floodgate during a storm. Closing it now diverts floodwater away from the crowded town and into the low quarter containing her empty childhood home. Leaving it open protects that quarter but lets the town flood. There is time for one lever operation before the mechanism locks. No third channel exists. Her sister has already evacuated their home and entrusted Iona with its front-door key. Earlier Iona promised the town watch she would give the evacuation signal before acting. The home will be destroyed if the gate closes; the story has not promised that all property can be saved. Nobody can arrive in time to decide for her.

Deliberately flawed example

Deliberately flawed example: Iona hesitates, a stranger pulls a hidden second lever, and the storm stops. The town and home are saved. A beautiful sunrise explains that she has learned courage.

List promises separately from wishes

The story promises a decision about the gate, the consequence for the home, and an evacuation signal. It may make the reader hope for a rescue, but hope is not evidence of a third channel. Mark the difference before drafting.

A final action can be morally difficult and still complete the story. You need not reward Iona with compensation or universal approval. Show the cost already attached to her chosen action.

Vary the value and the aftermath

Try one ending in which she saves the town and accepts private loss, another in which she saves the town but makes the cost public, and another in which she chooses the home and faces the town's loss. The third may be disturbing; its effectiveness depends on the story preparing that priority, not on a sudden personality change.

Write a final image that follows from the decision. A key that no longer opens a standing door can carry the aftermath. An unrelated explosion may be exciting but cannot answer which lever Iona moved.

One possible revision

One possible revision — three endings:
A. Private cost: Iona sounded the evacuation bell, waited for the watch's answering flag, and pulled the gate closed. Water slid into the low quarter. By dawn only the chimney of her house remained. She gave her sister the key. 'I kept you safe,' she said, and could not say she had kept everything. Cost: home lost; family grief remains. Town protected.
B. Public account: After the answering flag, Iona closed the gate. In the safe square she drew the destroyed streets onto the relief map, including her own. When the watch called her a hero, she placed the key on the map. 'Count these houses too.' Cost: home lost; she refuses a clean celebration and risks official displeasure. Town protected; compensation remains open.
C. Refusal: Iona rang the evacuation signal and left the gate open. The lock caught. Across the river her childhood roof stayed above water while the town lamps went out one by one. At the inquiry she laid down her trainee badge before anyone asked. Cost: town property floods and her career ends; the house survives. This ending requires earlier evidence that she would place the home above her duty; without it, revise the setup rather than pretending it is earned.
Promise table: Gate choice—closed in A/B, open in C; resolved in all. Evacuation signal—shown before action in all. Home—destroyed in A/B, preserved in C. Town—protected in A/B, flooded in C. Sister's safety—fixed evacuation fact retained. Future career/compensation—deliberately open except badge resignation in C.
Selection: B, if the story's focus is responsibility for public choices and who bears their cost.

What changed and why

  • Returned the lever action to Iona, so the climax answers her dilemma instead of delegating it to an unexplained rescuer.
  • Tracked the signal, home, and town explicitly, preserving consequences rather than using a sunrise as a substitute for resolution.

A choice worth keeping

Keep a bitter remainder in the chosen ending. Saving the town does not require Iona to feel grateful for losing her home.

Try it with fresh material

Original transfer material: Curator Ben can release the only surviving recording of a protest. Release will prove a wrongly blamed worker's innocence but identify a speaker who asked for privacy. Ben promised to contact the speaker before any publication. He has time for one call; no anonymous version can preserve the identifying evidence. The speaker may consent or refuse, but consent is not guaranteed. The worker's hearing is tomorrow.

Write three ending sketches with distinct choices or costs, plus a table tracking the call promise, recording, worker's case, and speaker's privacy. Select one and name any earlier setup it needs. Deliver endings and table.

Feedback for your attempt

  • Does Ben make the consequential choice, including how he handles consent? An accidental leak evades the central task unless the story is deliberately about that failure.
  • If your ending saves everything, show the established mechanism; do not invent perfect redaction.
  • An unresolved long-term relationship can remain open after the immediate recording decision is clear.

Check before moving on

  • Find the sentence where the protagonist acts or deliberately refuses.
  • Check every earlier promise against the ending, including practical steps such as a signal.
  • Label a needed setup as unfinished work rather than calling every drafted ending equally earned.
